Great Holiday Gift Ideas

This post brought to you by Sharper Image. All opinions are 100% mine. When my sons were born, an indispensable gift I received was a Sound Soother. It conditioned sounds that entered our home so my sons weren’t awoken with every noise, and I had some peace and quiet at well. To be honest, I […]

  • I have a sleep sheep for my little one which plays various white noise sounds. A machine like this is great for the kid’s room!

  • Maryann

We used something similar to the sound soother for our son with autism to help distract him from noise when we would work on his therapies.

  • I still have to shop for hubby, but have been considered a bluetooth speaker for him. He currently transports his wired speakers for his iPod everywhere. Wireless would be ideal for him!

  • I love having some sort of sound machine. They’re so relaxing. 🙂

  • We are huge Sharper Image fans!

  • that docking station is REALLY slick. I love it

  • That back massager looks like the perfect gift for my husband.

  • I bought a massage chair several years ago and I’ll tell you…best investment ever!

  • I could totally use the seat massager. Going to put that on my list.

  • Those are some really great gift ideas.

  • What great suggestions! Sharper Image has always had some of the coolest items around.

  • I think I would like to receive any of those 🙂

  • Leilani

    I’d love that back massager.

  • I think that back massager would come in handy since I am always at my desk.

  • Kelly @ Texas Type A Mom

We use a fan to provide white noise for our baby but that sound soother would be a lot more discrete when we’re on vacation.

After School Fun {Gift Card Give Away}

My son loves school- he loves the crafts and the games and learning and playing. I want him to come home and have as much fun after school, so I try to make sure we have things that will entertain and inspire him at home as well, such as sports gear, craft products, and games. […]

Gift Idea For Men: SentrySafe Home Safe {Give Away}

My husband is a police officer, and one of the first things he planned to buy himself for our new home was a safe where he could keep his weapon when he brings it home, safely away from our sons and anyone else. I loved the idea of a home safe, one that bolts to […]

You Can Tame A Stallion, But You Can’t Teach A Donkey To Run

I have lively, happy, energetic boys, and I love it. They run around, they laugh, they are full of joy and life and certainly keep my on my toes. My three year old is especially adventurous and curious, and I credit chasing after him for my quick weight loss after each pregnancy. Not everyone likes […]

  • Such a wise women with wise words I love that saying

  • I think my mom kinda falls into that lady’s clucking category, so I’m trying to figure out why she ever wanted six kids. LOL Sometimes I think people forget what it’s like to be a kid.

  • Donna

My mom was the same as Liz’… in church we HAD to be well behaved. I’m more in the middle. 🙂 I love your Grandma’s saying!

  • Heather!

I have never heard that before, but it’s perfect! My mom always said she didn’t want her kids to be jellyfish. I think she was looking for a saying like this!

  • Jenn

Go grandma go! We run into the same sort of thing as we look for a new church. For some reason the small country churches around here don’t believe in a nursery for the babies. They just say “oh we don’t mind the noise we’re used to it.” Well, I’M not used to it and can’t focus on the sermon when my toddler wants me to read her a book, show me what she’s coloring, or decorate my arm with stickers. Just sayin’

  • I have a couple of stallions too!

  • Penelope

Lol, but it’s sweet they say they don’t mind the noise 🙂 Our priest says “Don’t take the babies out if they cry, they want to hear the sermon too!”…it’s very sweet. But I know other people who can’t hear it definitely don’t appreciate it.

  • LOL! LOVE IT! Nothing like Yiayia to defend her boys!

  • Rachel at managedmoms.com

I love this post and I’m here to tell you that my daughter was the exact same way as a little one. Some folks would frown and some said rude things to me, but a lot of other thoughtful people told me that I would love these qualities as she got older. They were right! She is now 11 years old and is very self-sufficient. Just this weekend, she had a big role in our community theatre’s Christmas Carol production and they did 5 shows. She is super tired today, but was up and at em this AM ready for school and ready for another big event that she has tonight. That spirit and high energy has been channeled into some good stuff. So congratulations on having high energy intelligent kids and great job to you and to your Grandma for understanding and supporting those qualities that actually end up taking them far in life! And your Priests do sound lovely! That is great!

  • I agree totally!

  • Such an great story and too many people are quick to pass judgement when it comes to parenting. If they worried half as much about their own children as they do those of others, perhaps we would all be better off!

  • I love your grandma! LOL That’s a much more dignified than I would have given that lady!

  • Maryann

    how true!

  • I think children need to be lively! Go to your grandma!!

  • Mellisa

LOL! That is a great saying and I totally agree.

  • … and some nasty ladies are the donkeys backside 😉

  • Isn’t that the truth! Go grandma.

  • Billie

Love it! Your Grandma sure is spicy. Mine has caught us off guard a few times with zingers like those too.

  • My son is full of energy! Kids are going to be kids. Many forget that they were kids once, too. 🙂

  • I have 3 young highly spirited stallions (sons) myself and man, I absolutely love this quote from your grandma. I wish I had her around when we got glares at church too when my 1-year old was having trouble sitting through a very long Ash Wednesday mass in a very crowded Catholic church. New fan here from SITS, love your simple and colorful blog design as well.

  • LOL love that saying. So true.

  • So very true!

ISO 101 #Photography

It’s been a while since I wrote a photography tutorial post…life has been busy, to say the least! But I’m ready to pick up where we left off. I wrote about aperture and shutter speed in the past, so today we focus on the third aspect of the exposure triangle: ISO, which is just as […]

THese are such great tips. I’m hoping to get my first DSLR soon so I’ll have to keep these tips in mind when I do!

  • Thanks for the tips! I’ve been playing with my DSLR camera without automatic mode and since I”m not up on all the lingo, a post like this helps me understand things better!

  • Maryann

I keep getting better and better with my photography but I keep needing to return to the basics until i get them memorized.

  • Great tips Penelope. I’m just working out taking photos in low light situations and this was helpful.

  • Mellisa

I am definitely bookmarking these posts. I am hoping the hubby gets me a new camera for Christmas and I can use all the help I can get with tips on how to take great photos.

  • I try not to go over 800 on my ISO and use manual mode always. Great tips, Penelope!

  • This is great advice. I just started shooting at 1600 ISO inside at night with the Christmas lights. I am still working on it, but happy with the shots and lights.

  • Thanks for the lesson on ISO. I’m still so confused by my camera and I’ve had it for two years.

  • WOW what a difference for some reason no matter what I read I don’t “get it” I so want to take a hands on class or tutorials on online that include homework.

  • Your tutorials are so helpful. I have a DSLR but only shoot in auto mode because I need to learn how to use it.

  • Great tips! One day I’ll get a better camera!

  • For me adjusting ISO has been the biggest help for my pics.

  • I just wish it did not mean grainy photos.

  • Great tips. I know nothing about camera settings actually just pulled my camera manual out to start reading. This helps a lot!

  • Thanks for the great tips! I need all the help I can get as my photos suck badly.

  • Jenn

Yay for ISO! I usually use 3500 indoors at our house since we don’t have much natural light.

  • Penelope

I crank it up high myself, totally not scared of it 🙂

  • I’m going to take a beginner photography class in January and then this will all finally make sense to me and I’ll move off the auto mode! Your tutorials are really good!

  • Thanks for explaining this so I could understand it. 🙂

  • Good tips for those starting out! Great job, Penelope.

  • These are great tips. I am doing just the bare minimum with my camera and really need to learn to do more.

  • Donna

You’ve become quite the photographer, Penelope! I wish I had the interest… but if it ever strikes me, I know I can learn a lot from your tutorials!

  • I would never in a million years think that photo was noisy. Then again, I know nothing about photography yet and your pictures are truly great!

  • Leilani

I took a photography class at the beginning of the year and learned about ISO. If you don’t use it, you definitely lose it. This post was a great reminder of the things I learned. I’m actually going to bookmark it. Thanks!

  • I wish I had a better understanding of this, but this does help, thanks!

  • This is so helpful. I like to take pics, but always have a hard time grasping the number. I am book marking this post. Thanks.
