A Month In Black And White #Photography

I was recently told that to learn to really edit photos well, you need to first learn to edit photos in black and white exclusively, for maybe a week, a month, ideally for four months. Four months?? Um, okโ€ฆwhy not? If it worked for other photographers on their road to developing a good eye for […]

  • I am about to start watching the DVD and read the manual that came with my camera. I think that is a great idea – the B&W editing. I must try it because my photos need a ton of work.

  • What a great challenge! I love that first one with the water spraying in the air.

  • Love the black and white photos. That sprinkler shot is amazing!

  • I love your photos.

  • I love black and white photos it brings them to life a little more.

  • I’m loving these pictures. the first one captures so many things – just beautiful work Penelope!

  • I think black and white photos can be very powerful and moving. I love that you are working on this project. I don’t have any photography projects in the works but do enjoy taking pictures.

  • This is a great challenge! You take amazing pics. I need to learn how to make the most of my camera asap.

  • Great pictures! I love black and white pictures. ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Black and white photos are my absolute fave!

  • Love the photo with the UPS truck.

  • I like the look of black and white– I never edit my photos to B&W though.

  • What stunning photos! I think black and white pictures have an infamously classic look.

  • I’m not working on any photography projects right now but I totally need to. Great job on the black and white!

  • I adore black & white photography. My favorite photo ever is a professional newborn photo I had done right after Gav was born where I’m holding him. It is absolutely precious, in black & white.

  • I think the photos are fantastic! I wish I had time to study photography more, but between homeschooling three of the boys, driving two hours each day to take the other to school and trying to work, there just isn’t time left for me.

  • Those came out beautifully! I especially love the first shot with the fence being bright white yet you can still see the water droplets all over.

  • Those are great shots! I love black & white photos and really should shoot, or at least edit, in b&w more. I hope you learn a lot & have fun with this project!

  • A new camera is coming my way next week! I cannot wait to get a project going. Photoshop is still on my list.

  • Penelope

What camera did you get? Isn’t it exciting?

  • Penelope

    That sounds beautiful ๐Ÿ™‚

  • The black and white looks amazing for the photos. You did a great job.

  • Your photos are beautiful in any color or lack of color!

  • Mellisa

    Beautiful Photos Penelope.

  • I adore the 1st two shots, but food needs color for me personally.

  • I love your photos Penelope.

  • Penelope

Yah, some things need color to be appealing

  • love the 1st photo its GORGEOUS in Black and white dont’ have any projects right now but I’ have so gorgeous photos I took up at the lake

  • I love that first picture! So classic modern day America!

  • Nothing going on right now but I just got lightroom and really want to learn it, I just need to find the time LOL

  • Penelope

It is awesome! Did you get Lightroom 5 or 4?

  • I love all of these and the different feel black and white gives to each shot.

  • Donna

I love B&W photography (with the exception of food, because it needs color to look appetizing)! Your first photo could be in a magazine!

  • You’re going to be exceptional at this, I can tell! I want to take a class at a store here in town as a starting point but it’s just finding the time that is the trick…

  • These pictures are absolutely beautiful! You sure have an eye for the right shot, Especially the sprinkler shot, it looks so dramatic for a summer’s day. I love the idea of learning to edit photos by starting with black & white, I think I might try that myself!

We’re Hosting The Labor Day Bash This Year! #HebrewNational #99SummerDays

This weekend we are hosting our Labor Day bash with our family, and I can’t wait! It’s the first time we will celebrate the holiday in our new home (or ever), and the fourth barbecue party we had this summer. We discovered we love throwing parties! I headed over to Trader Joe’s to pick up […]

  • We only eat Hebrew National. This looks like such a fun time.

  • Mellisa

I’m so sad that summer is almost over. These look great and I will definitely plan on making some before fall hits.

  • I’m picking some up for the weekend!

  • We’ll be doing much the same thing you’re doing and having a backyard BBQ party with some friends!

  • We’re actually going out of town this weekend as we’re a little tired of BBQ.

  • Jennifer @ The Quirky Momma

I’m actually doing nothing on Labor Day weekend. We just returned from a very long and exhausting vacation so we’re staying home.

  • We actually have no Labor Day plans ๐Ÿ™ Kids go back to school the day after Labor Day here so we try to keep things calm the night before the first day.

  • I hope to have lunch with some fantastic women on Labor Day. I hope you have a blast.

  • We love Hebrew National! That sounds like a great party!

  • It looks like the makings of a great party!

  • Sounds like it’s going to be quite a bash! Honestly, I don’t have any plans for Labor Day since it doesn’t seem like my family is going to be doing anything, so I guess it’s just a weekend for me to kick back and relax. ๐Ÿ™‚

  • We’re going to my in-laws. Lots of food family and fun! Of course we’ll be BBQ’n it up too ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Looks like we’ll be setting up an irrigation system for our house foundation in the hot Texas sun — Your BBQ sounds like a much better option!

  • Sounds like a great party! We’re grilling out, too.

  • I am so excited for a little labor day relaxation with our Hewbrew National as well. I hope you have a great one.

  • We aren’t doing anything special for LD but after this post, I wish I had some party plans in the works!!!!

  • It looks like you’re going to have a delicious Labor Day! We will be celebrating with family and wishing summer a fond farewell with my dad’s famous pulled pork sandwiches.

  • We are just relaxing for the holiday weekend.

  • I wish we were having a Labor Day cookout. I have an awesome new indoor grill coming soon though, so it looks like we will be able to enough Hebrew Nationals all winter long!

  • We don’t have any real labor day plans but yours sound like fun! I wish we were throwing or going to a party.

  • Have fun at your bash! We are just having a small cookout for family.

  • Donna

We just wrapped up a 13 show of “Tom Sawyer” at our children’s theatre with a cast party last night where we didn’t get home until almost 11pm. Today (Sunday) will be the first time in 2 months where we didn’t have either rehearsals or performances on a Sunday, so I’m not leaving my house. ๐Ÿ™‚ As for Labor Day, my nephew is having a birthday party, so we’ll go to that. I’m sad that summer is over, though. But I’ll eat hot dogs anytime of the year. ๐Ÿ™‚

  • we drove out to Michigan for fun on the lake and BBQ

  • Jennifer @ MySweetSanity

Oh your bash sounds fun and yummy. We are having a decent sized family gathering. Mostly it’s to celebrate my brother’s engagement.

  • How fun!! I love those icepop maker cups!

We didn’t do anything today because unfortunately, my husband had to work ๐Ÿ™ So it was just a nice chill day at home. I was planning to grill out just me and the girls but then the rain came through and ruined my plans.

  • My husband had to work so the kids and I just stayed at home and played around here.

  • Sounds like it’s going to be a great day! I have to ask, what are the additional pieces on the sides of the popsicle handles?

  • Penelope

That is to sip the juice out of as it melts into the handle-cup part ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Looks like y’all were ready for a great Labor day party

  • I hope your Labor Day party was a success! I think I grew to love Hebrew National a little more this summer.
