Every year being more organized and finding a method for staying on top of my housekeeping tops my New Year Resolutions. And every year I fail, until I realized my method was all wrong. I didn’t needs lots of lists and routines to stay organized, or apps to tell me what chore I have to do. I needed to simplify, and minimize. Over the last year, it all because easier with less- less things, less scheduling, less to do.
And I’m happy to share how I did it!
How To (Really) Simplify Housekeeping
1 Get rid of most of your stuff. You have to clean a lot because you have a lot to clean. You don’t need, or ever use, most of it. Get rid of it… this is unbelievably freeing. Read blogs like Zen Habits to understand the whys and hows, but for now, just know you need to do this.
2 Clean with less. You don’t need products for every chore, so try to find products that do double duty, like a castille dish soap that can be used for handsoap, a cleansing solution that will clean floors and the bathroom and be safe enough to use for kitchen counters too… just use less, so you have less to store and keep track of.
3 Make simple routines, like a day for laundry, a day for market shopping and refilling the pantry, etc. If it gets too complicated (ie having to dust decor constantly or polish silver, it means you have too much, and it’s complicated- see #1).
4 Don’t be obsessive about perfection. No one really cares if you only vacuum once a week. No one is judging you, so just relax, do your best, and keep it simple.
