Urgent Care on Demand

As a parent, there are often times I have medical questions about my son or have to deal with something concerning, and it’s helpful to have someone help me figure things out and guide me. Other mom friends and a pediatrician are great resources, but they aren’t necessarily available around the clock or on demand. I have two grade school children who love to participate in some pretty rough sports, or spend time with other (sometimes sick) children at school, so I definitely need access to a service that is there exactly when I need it. Bumps, bruises, and fevers are a part of life when you have kids, and American Well is that service that provides help to parents when they need urgent care or advice- even at 10 p.m. on a Friday night or 2 a.m. on a Tuesday morning.

American Well is the nation’s largest telehealth company, connecting patients with their choice of doctor for immediate visits live, right from your home, at any time of day or night. Amwell provides online access to a doctor any hour of the day, seven days a week, via any smart gadget or desktop computer, and provide care for everyone in your family, children or adults. Since I have two sons and lots of questions, I appreciate knowing I can call American Well for help- and have been able to since I first connected with them almost five years ago

American Well offers both primary care doctors and specialist physicians, behavioral therapists and nutritionists, and can provide answers to questions about general health and wellness concerns, chronic condition management, minor illnesses and injuries, prescription refills, and (maybe most importantly) urgent care. It’s like opening your medicine cabinet and having a little physician waiting on one of the shelves! When I log in, I am taken to a provider page so I could choose with whom to connect, and there are always lots of options for physicians, nutritionists, and internists. It lets me know who is “Available now”, which is incredibly reassuring. To be honest, as a mom with young children, knowing who to reach out to immediately for urgent care is one of the most important things of all.

The weather has become very cold, and the boys are in school, and we can’t put everything on hold to run to emergency rooms for what may be minor issues- it’s too disruptive! Instead, we reach out to a physician on Amwell, and most of the time, life goes on an usual. If we need more urgent care, she will direct us to seek it out, but most of the time, remote medical care can be handled in our home with some good advice on what to do as parents- hopefully no ER room visit after midnight necessary. Amwell doesn’t replace emergency care when you have a real emergency, they complement in-person care and guide you with the next steps.
