Philadelphia Is On Our Mind This Winter

Whenever we think of taking a break, our thoughts turn to taking a road trip to someplace fabulous, and not too far that our kids don’t enjoy the travel (they are still little). For us New Yorkers, Philadelphia is practically a hop, skip and jump away. Philadelphia is full of culture and history, something we favor for anyplace we plan to visit. We would love to spend some time enjoying the Cradle of Liberty, and teaching our boys about the birth of our great nation.

Philadelphia is also wonderfully cozy during the winter, with a variety of quality hotels to choose from, as well as fireside dining. Whether we go for a weekend or, more likely, during the week, there are so many beautiful places to visit that look utterly magical when it snows, like Rittenhouse Square:

We sat down to plan our dream 3 day, 2 night vacation for our family, and we’d want to visit a lot of family-friendly, fun places. Our focus is Rittenhouse Square, so the Rittenhouse Hotel and some of the amazing restaurants in the area that feature fireplaces and fire pits are on our itinerary, especially Continental Midtown (rooftop dining with fireplace) and XIX (features a library style bar). It’s winter, and nothing is cozier to me than a relaxing in front of a blazing fire while I enjoy a hot beverage and cuddle with my family, so this would be perfect this winter.

The 2014 Philadelphia Flower Show takes place from March 1-9, and this year Flower Show designers are collaborating with art museums to produce what will surely be a breathtaking visual display across ten acres. It’s a fusion of art and horticulture, and paintings are influencing the flower designs- it will be amazing! It will even feature a remarkable aerial dance troupe (I can’t even imagine). There will be interactive aspects so visitors can create their own art, and overall, it would be a blast for anyone, children included.

Franklin Square is another “must visit”, featuring a fun family park with Philly-themed miniature golf, playgrounds, a restored marble fountain, and an old-fashioned carousel, plus some great burger places nearby. We would also absolutely visit the Liberty Bell while there, and enjoy one of Philadelphia’s many coffee houses each day.

Philadelphia also has some unique attractions that we might want to check out, like the Insectarium, one of the country’s largest bug museums, which even features some extinct species of bugs, or the Stoogeum, the headquarters for The Stooges fans (actually, maybe I shouldn’t mention that one to my husband, we might spend our whole trip there).
