So you want to find out the gender as soon as possible…are you having a boy or a girl? Well, are you carrying your baby high or low? According to old wives tales, if you’re pregnant and carrying high you are having a girl, and if you are carrying low you are having a boy. This and many other baby gender predictors were traditionally used by old wives and young to tell the gender of your baby (you know, way before ultrasounds were invented)- not necessarily accurate gender prediction, but fun.
So today I decided to test them all. Well, almost all. We are skipping the Drano test- I am NOT using Drano in any way, shape, or form to determine the sex of my baby (who came up with that one??). We tried the Chinese Gender chart and the string test in the last few weeks, and it’s still another three weeks before my doctor will tell me what the sex of my baby will be, so in the meantime I’ll have fun trying out some more of these at home baby gender predictor tests, starting with the Cabbage Gender Test.

Cabbage Gender Predictor Test To Determine Baby’s Sex
A fun baby gender predictor test I haven’t tried yet but recently heard about is using a fresh head of cabbage in the following way:
1. Buy a head of red cabbage and chop it into small bits (the smaller the better).
2. Boil chopped cabbage in water for about ten minutes, until water turns a deep purple color. You are read to test!
3. Drain the cabbage and save the purple water- this is what you are testing with.
4. Pee in a cup and set your urine cup aside.
5. Measure out an equal amount of cabbage water and add it to your urine specimen.
If the water stays purple, it’s a girl, and if it turns a red or pink color, it’s a boy.
My results? The water turned a bright, vivid green. Huh?
This is the basis of the cabbage gender test: your pee has a specific pH (at that moment- it can range from 4.5-8 based on your diet and other factors), and if you are having a girl, it would not change the color of the cabbage water because you are a girl, but a baby boy’s urinary pH would. This is assuming all female urine has the same pH and male pee has a different pH, which it untrue, pretty much invalidating this test. I learned all this after doing the exam, but I researched further to find out why my boiled cabbage test water turned such a bluish green, and according to chemistry sites by basic pH is a result of a diet high in vegetables, citrus fruit and dairy. Well, I eat a lot of veggies anyway.
Other gender prediction tests:
Did your husband gain sympathy weight? Another old wives tale states that if your husband gains weight during your pregnancy (symphathy weight) you are having a girl, but my husband gained 35 pounds with little man and we had a boy. This time around he hasn’t gained any weight.
What sexual position did you use? Missionary means a girl, and doggie-style is boy: I don’t remember, and even if I did…I’m not telling!
Do you have a lot of morning sickness during your pregnancy? Morning Sickness means a girl, but I had massive nausea all day with little man for four straight months, so this one was a fail for us. I had two months of morning sickness this time, so we’ll see.
Other tests I’m going to skip include determining whether my diet is more protein rich (boy) or magnesium rich (girl); I have no idea what my diet was mainly, basing it on baby’s heart rate (also have no clue), what kind of underwear my husband wears, and whether I look more beautiful pregnant (boy)…but don’t all pregnant women look beautiful? Until the seventh month?
These most accurate gender prediction method apparently is when a woman is asked what her instincts tell her she is carrying- about 75% are correct. When I was carrying little man I was told he was a girl at 14 weeks. I couldn’t believe it, because I was positive I was having a baby boy. POSITIVE. I thought she made a mistake, and for the six weeks until my level two sonogram I was sure they’d tell me “Oop, we were wrong”. Sure enough, they did, so I kind of think mother’s instinct is a pretty good indicator.
The rest of these baby gender prediction methods are about 50% right (sort of like flipping a coin), so if you want an accurate gender prediction, trust your instincts, get a sonogram, or wait and find out when your baby is born.

Well, you can bet it’s either a boy or a girl, lol. I don’t think any of those tests can really tell you.
I’ve never heard of the cabbage one.
I bet green means twins. Just kidding, but that would be funny.
HAHAHAH – I’m sorry we had a good laugh about this at home – we think you’re having twins — boy and girl and the ultrasound just couldn’t pick the second baby up in utero yet….;) – Okay maybe not… 🙂
What’s your gut say this time?!
At first it said a girl, then a boy…I don’t know!
I’ve never seen the cabbage one before, that is a lot of work to go to.
