I’ve been writing about growing my vegetable garden this year, and my reasons for growing… to give my family the best I can, because I’m raising two young gentlemen. In my garden, behind our home, I grow health, with vegetables and herbs, and over time more and more will be added.
This is the second year I am growing an organic lettuce garden, and this year I expanded it to include a few more vegetables, and some fresh air-enhancing flowers too. While I work in the garden, my sons run around and play, enjoying some exercise and fresh air amidst the organic vegetables that will soon grace our dinner table. I use Miracle-Gro products to help me successfully create a lush garden, and my boys like to “help” too, with a small orange shovel we bought them to dig (ie lift dirt from one spot and toss it aside to another area while making a big ol’ mess- So I guess we are growing fun memories too!). And if they see me enjoying myself in our garden, and grow a love of gardening over time as well, that would be pretty darned great.

If you are looking to start growing a garden, my beginner tips are:
1. Don’t be scared to start (like I was), it’s much easier than it looks, and pretty fun too…so just start! You often learn as you go and there are so many resources of information, as well as people eager to help.
2. Don’t stress about perfection or the technicalities too much, because the plants don’t know if they are 12 inches or 14 inches away from the next plant. Just enjoy being outdoors, creating something.
3. Be adventurous. I never thought I’d be growing eggplants and cucumbers, and next year I plan to add tomatoes in a big spot I haven’t worked on in the garden yet…talk about feeling awesomely self sufficient!

When I try to grow things die the best I got is an aloe plant because it just can’t die LOL.
I have so much to learn about gardening still. I’m giving a go of it right now, but we’ll see…
I love planting a garden , it makes me feel great when I can walk out to my garden and pick fresh veggies for meals.
One day I’ll get a garden going…I kill plants like Colleen too, so it’s hard.
Good tips! My dad loved to garden so I grew up helping him! I can’t wait for the freezes to be over so I can plant some flowers and start our garden!
I’m really looking forward to planting my garden. I have to wait another month or the frost will get it.
I’m picking up my veggies tomorrow 🙂
I love growing green beans! They are super easy and hardy to grow. But now I really want to grow a cucumber or eggplant. We keep dipping down into the frost area at night… so I’m weary to even really start planting things yet. 🙁
I’ll be planting my garden next week after I pick up my starter plants. Excited!
Not allowing the perfectionist to take over is always extremely difficult for me. I am excited to see your garden continue to progress.
I’ve really tried to plant a garden in the past, but it never worked out. It would be okay for a few weeks and then the plants would die. Looks like your garden is off to a good start.
I so wish we had a yard or apartment with light so we could grow things as this looks great to use!
We are working on a garden this year. It will be nice to eat the fruits of our labor.
We grow for our health, our enjoyment and for our customers. We have a very small CSA but will be growing for others, plus selling extra produce at our farm stand. I planted lettuce, tomatoes, broccoli, sunflowers and a bunch of other things on Saturday in trays. I’m still too nervous to plant in the ground because of how cold it’s been.
These are great suggestions. I decided this year that I wasn’t going to be so hands-on. So far, it’s working out better than last year.
My only tip is to be diligent in caring for them as I’ve killed a lot of plants 😛
