Back-to-school haircuts are one of those annual events that we all look forward to because kids come out of salons looking fabulous and stylish and trendy. Typically, we get our sons’ buzz cuts every three months (once a season) because my husband likes the convenience of it, but they don’t like it at all. My boys would beg us each time to let them keep their hair a little longer in the front, so they can flip it up or spike it a bit like their friends do. They did not look forward to local barbershop visits where they were generally just asked “What number?” and left feeling bald and frustrated with us.
Great Clips, the world’s largest salon brand, has over 4,400 locations throughout the United States and Canada, including locations on Long Island. The salons offer a convenient and affordable style solution for parents to have their kids looking and feeling great heading into a new school year. My sons and I were excited to try them out for their back-to-school haircuts, because they are very affordable and offered a different approach than “What number?” haircuts.
I asked my sons (ages 7 and 10) to pose for me so I could get some shots of their “before” Great Clips haircuts. They have completely different hair types, hairlines, everything… totally different heads of hair (but both incredibly cute ♥). One son has hair that grows in little points around his ears and at the nape of his neck, so he asked for us to “cut those off” and keep it longer on top. My other son just requested that we “please, don’t shave it all off again!”
Great Clips may be all over the country, but I only recently found them here on Long Island. They don’t take appointments, and instead encourage walk-in visits. This worked out great, because I downloaded the Great Clips Online Check-In app and added our name to the list, which lets us know an estimated wait time and if there are others waiting before us, so we can keep our turn but run an errand if there is a wait. We saw that there wasn’t a wait, walked in after checking in on the app, and were taken care of by Maria (the manager and our stylist this evening) right away. The app is easy to use and also helps to locate a Great Clips wherever you may be.
We visited the closest salon to us, which was Parkway Plaza on Long Island (215 Glen Cove Rd Carle Place, NY 11514), and Maria chatted up the boys as she quickly and skillfully provided them with the haircut styles they requested. They loved talking to her (and I loved how she focused on each as they were in her chair, making each of my sons feel special and noticed – no talking to adults only!). They were so happy to finally have a stylist listen to them, share their ideal hairstyle with, who offered to cut hair in stages to make sure each was happy and it wasn’t too short. During the process, their progressively bigger smiles made it clear they liked what was happening on their heads. ♥
Maria also showed the boys how to style their hair with a little gel, so they would look super handsome and trendy each morning for school
It was a totally different experience than our local barber shop. Barbers are awesome, but they tend to not be too chatty with little kids. A stylist with a knack for chatting with kids and helping them enjoy getting a haircut? That’s priceless. Maria kept the information on the boys’ haircuts on “Clip Notes” so next time she could refer to it and see what style and numbers they used on the first visit and reproduce it. Clip Notes are visible to all Great Clips salons, so if you are on the road and find another location when you need a haircut, they can access your style info and you can always get the same great haircut. .
