Our Bedtime Tradition

We have a great bedtime routine. Every night the boys take baths and brush their teeth, pull on their pjs, and shuffle off to bed together to say a prayer and read a bedtime story. It’s how we end the day together, every night, and it’s become a family tradition.

Routines offer security and stability for children, and a bedtime routine that teaches our children the importance of taking care of their teeth and lets us share a love of reading is a wonderful tradition which I hope they continue with their own children one day. We teach by example, and I can’t think of a better way to end the day than together as a family, relaxing and drifting off to sleep after snuggling together with a good book.

Do you read aloud to your children?

Reading with your children can inspire a lifelong love of reading, and Scholastic and Orajel™ are teaming up for the Read2Me Tonight campaign in honor of World Read Aloud Day on February 24.

Starting February 11th, Scholastic and Orajel™ are encouraging parents to make brushing your teeth and reading out loud to your children a part of the family bedtime routine, and will continue to encourage this wonderful family ritual during March, National Reading Month, and throughout the summer.

I used to read to my sons, peppering stories with unique voices and funny sounds for each character, until my older son learned how to read. He loves to read so much now, and every night he reads aloud to his brother and I, using unique voices and funny sounds of his own invention.

Tonight after we brush our teeth together, we will read a new e-book, The Three Bees, free from Scholastic.

Whether you read to your children, or they read to you, a tradition of bedtime story time is incredibly bonding, and will provide your children with some of their best memories of time spent with you.

You can also find the Read2Me Tonight Challenge until the end of March, where parents who take a photo or video of themselves reading out loud to their children as part of their bedtime routine can enter for a chance to win all 100 Best Read-Aloud Books and a PAW Patrol™ “Brushers Bundle” from Orajel™. The Brushers Bundle includes a 4.2 oz Bottle of Orajel™ PAW Patrol™ Anticavity Flouride Toothpaste and an Orajel™ PAW Patrol™ Toothbrush- a great way to transition you little ones to fluoride toothpaste to help protect against cavities and keep young teeth and gums healthy. My son says “yum!” when he uses the toothpaste.

March is National Reading Month

As a bibliophile, I plan to celebrate both World Read Aloud Day on February 24th and National Reading Month in March with regular trips to our local libraries and bookstores to pick out some great books for myself and my boys, and each evening will continue to read with them.

If you’d like to raise little readers too, celebrate these events with your children and make an event of it! Ready to take the Read 2 Me Tonight Challenge with your children?
