It’s time to get grilling! Every year, we love to host weekly get-togethers once the weather warms up and invite all our friends over, because what is better than bbq’ed food and good conversation? Well, I just found out, because for the first time ever, I ate burgers off a charcoal grill with natural briquettes, and the taste is phenomenal!
You may be wondering where I’ve been, never having used a charcoal grill…well, I’ve been in regular old’ gas grilling purgatory, not knowing what I was missing by not having a naturally smokey charcoal grilled burger.
We invited some of our best friends over for the evening and we broke out our brand new Char-Broil Kettleman Grill, and learned to use a chimney starter for the first time…it was actually fun, and the smoky smell of the burgers and dogs cooking is utterly amazing. Needless to say, the smoky good barbecue taste of it all was beyond anything also!

Char-Broil had been building and improving grills for over 65 years, and their new Kettleman 22.5” Charcoal Grill (MSRP $139) is an updated and majorly improved kettle-style grill that is more efficient and easier to use. My idea of a charcoal grill was always a sort of tin can thingamajig that you put charcoal in, pour lighter fluid on, and set ablaze. This amazing Charcoal Grill has a load of new features that make it quite a bit more elegant that what I was used to seeing around in picnic areas.
Cool Features Of The Kettleman Charcoal Grill
1. Temperature Control via a large vent in the hinged lid to let heat out, or close to let the temperature rise again…you are in control! There are also vents all around the body of the kettle to allow air to fuel the fire from all sides, providing even heat.
2. Flare-Up Control The no-fall-through grate is porcelain-enamel coated for more even heating, and small foods like shrimp and asparagus won’t fall through into the fire.
3. Charcoal Control – Designed to grill twice as many burgers with the same 50 briquettes as the leading kettle- this is really true! When we bought the chimney for the briquettes, I had no idea what to look for so bought a compact size. One of our guests, my husband’s buddy, said it didn’t look like much came out of it. And then we put them in the kettle, and he said “woah! That’s a lot of heat from those…you don’t need much with this grill!”….straight from the mouth of an expert griller.
4. Ash Control – The porcelain coated ashtray slides out when it’s time to empty, making clean up super easy.
5. Stability Control – Wide stance, heavy-gauge steel legs add stability and easy mobility. A bottom shelf doubles as a holder for the cooking grate or other accessories.

The dudes had a great time manning it up around the grill, cooking up the hotdogs and burgers for the rest of us to enjoy. The kids ran around, and us ladies enjoyed putting our feet up for a minute and letting someone else do the cooking for a change! Men sure do like cooking their meat over an open flame 🙂

All in all, a great way to spend a beautiful, warm Sunday afternoon.

My husband will be all over this. He’s a big fan of classic grilling. No gas, and no fancy grills. Thanks!
There’s nothing better than grilling out in the spring/summertime. We grill dinner so often during the summer months!
I know I shouldn’t say this, but that is a pretty grill! My husband does not have a charcoal grill any longer and I know he would love that.
We love grilling and even though we are in Boston, we cook out all year long. It’s soooo good.
This is really neat. My step dad would love this. He makes the BEST steak I have ever had
I don’t think there is anything that tastes as good as food cooked on a charcoal grill! This sounds like an amazing one!
Charcoal and gas grills have very distinct tastes. We has a gas grill because it just seemed easier, but I’m missing the smell of the burning charcoal & the flavor it brings.
We need a new grill, badly. Our last one totally gave out on us and this looks like a really great one!
My family loves to use our own Char-broil grill that we bought over the last summer. My husband is very selective about the ones we purchase when it’s time to replace our old grills. We hope to keep ours for a long time.
My husband and son both love grilling. They would grill for every meal if they could.
This sounds like a great grill. My husband has been talking about getting a new one. I will share this with him.
