Growing up, my father always said, “You don’t get another set of teeth or eyes, so take care of them”. We always went to the dentist and eye doctor annually, and today I continue this with my own family. The same way that we go for annual physical exams to make sure everything is fine, we also go to the dentist and eye doctor for annual check-ups.
Annual eye exams such as the VSP Vision Care WellVision Exam are important for overall health because they allow VSP eye doctors to detect early signs of serious health conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure and cholesterol, and more. If you have children, the beginning of the school year, as your children prepare to go back to school, is a great time to go for their annual eye exam. School screenings are not as comprehensive as a full exam so it’s preferable to take your children yourself, starting with babies as young as six months old (to make sure everything is developing well), again at three years of age, and then annually starting before kindergarten.

Good Vision Health is important! Did you know:
- 80 percent of what we learn is through our eyes
- Common signs of vision problems include squinting, head tilting, trouble focusing, eye rubbing, and headaches
- 25% of children have an undetected vision condition that can negatively impact their learning
Eyeglasses are a great way to express your personal style, and you can find flattering frames for everyone in your family who needs them, from among hundreds of designer styles available at the eye doctor’s office, so they can be happy wearing eye glasses.
What are the benefits of enrolling in vision insurance? With VSP Vision Care vision insurance, you will:
- Keep your eyes healthy
- Save money
- Get access to great eyewear
- Enable your family to experience life to the fullest

“Both UVA and UVB are believed to cause cataracts, macular degeneration, and melanomas (cancerous growths both inside and around the eyes), all of which can cause blindness.” Wear Polarized sunglasses! 🙂
I learned a fact that digital eyestrain, or Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS), is defined as “any number of eye or vision-related problems that can occur from computer use.” Symptoms include: blurry vision, difficulty focusing, dry and irritated eyes, headaches, and even neck and back pain. I always make sure I take breaks when I am on the computer to keep my eyes healthy 🙂

I learned that I need to be looking for sunglasses that protect from UVB and UVA rays, have an amber or brown tint, have frames that cover the face as much as possible, and consider polarized lenses.
I’m definitely going to treat myself to a better pair of sunglasses.

I learned that 80% of what you learn is through your eyes. Makes sense, but I never thought about it before.
It’s not about taking care of my eyes, but my kids eyes… I need to be better about looking for UVA/UVB protection in their sunglasses instead of just a fashion statement.
