We’re Saving Up To Send Little Man To MIT

MIT (the Massachusetts Institute of Technology) is the prestigious technical school featured is one of my favorite movies ever, Good Will Hunting. Its focus is science and technology, so of course when we went to Boston last month we had to visit.

The friendly MIT student steered us in the direction of the school’s more interesting visitor points, including MIT University’s Infinite Corridor, where the nerd in me relished in the never-ending row of science labs and displays of amazing accomplishments of past students, including a group of student who, along with champion bicyclist Kanellos Kanellopoulos, recreated the Flight Of Icarus from Greek mythology by designing and using a working, human-powered airplane! I kid you not, it is possible to bike ride through the air!!

Seeing all the students and the research laboratories was rather poignant for me. I dreamed of a career in pharmaceutical research, but my more mercenary side pursued paths that would yield more money, and eventually doing work that felt like nothing more than being just another mechanical step in a series of conveyor systems turned me off so totally that I gave up pharmacy altogether to purse my other loves, freelance writing and mommying.

MIT students are studying nanotechology (yes, that futuristic stuff in the movies), as well as a medley of other intriguing sciences and technological studies that I wasn’t even aware we were advanced enough as a society to be ready for:

My husband is a big proponent of community college. He feels education is the same everywhere, and if you are smart enough to get into an Ivy League school, you should be smart enough to get a scholarship, thus not needing to ever spend a fortune for a college education. While we toured MIT, he turned to me and said “You know what? If little man gets in here, we should pay for it.” I agreed. So now we are saving for up to pay MIT tuition (what most people make in a year), because I can’t think of anything more thrilling than a son who is allowed to explore his potential without limits based on money or our demands or expectations (even if that means he doesn’t want to go to MIT college…but I can hope).

He certainly looked right at home running around MIT’s great campus lawn:

I just love the picture of him on the lawn, looking back at the camera. Great school choice.

  • Go little man! You can do it! That’s a wonderful school, and I’m pretty sure that the higher price tag does reflect some of that.

  • He looks so tiny standing in front of that large university Too Cute.

We are saving (and hope he gets scholarships), for our son to go to Harvard or MIT. That’s our hopes & dreams, anyway. Love that last shot!
