What do you think of when you hear the word home? Does the word conjure up images of a cozy, warm abode? Do you think of someplace you can rest, relax, rejuvenate? Home to me is the place my husband and I return to, our escape from everything else. It’s our oasis. Our home is […]
The Bostonians is a terrific movie set in Boston in the late 1800’s and is adapted from the book of the same name by Henry James. It focuses on three main characters. Olive Chancellor (played by Vanessa Redgraves) is an ardent feminist, who sets her eyes on Verena Tarrant, a lovely and charming young woman […]

I like this movie too. I was a child when it came out, and it is cool because Henry James is my great uncle.

I like this film, it came out when I was a child, and I thought it esp. cool, because he was my great uncle!

That is so interesting! He was a very talented writer.

What is a feminine woman? What defines femininity? Femininity is a gentle quality in women that men find very attractive. It is a softness and delicateness, in her appearance, her manner, her behaviors, and her very nature. A feminine woman lacks masculine traits. She is not aggressive, competitive or fearless. She does not engage in […]

IOW, a feminine woman is the complete opposite of American Women.

Hey Penelope,
My brother showed me your blog and you have inspired me! Today I wore a dress to Uni as I read your blog beforehand and it was a lovely feeling being more feminine! My friends complemented me on how pretty it looked so thank you.
I look forward to reading your next blog.
Sincerely,

Here’s a woman after my own heart 🙂

*Must* subscribe to your blog. This is just lovely, and something I badly need, having grown up in an all-male household — I recently came to the shocking conclusion that I have *no idea* of how to be a woman!! That’s *sad,* so I’ll really look forward to reading your blog.

This was encouraging. I figured out a while ago that 9 out of ten pairs of jeans don't 'work' for me. Now I'm down to one pair and looking for alternatives. Thanks for the suggestions!

I love this article too. What is wrong with engaging in dangerous sports and being competitive, aggressive and fearless sometimes?
-
The only time it’s an issue is when you are this way with a man you are specifically interested in romantically. To be competitive at work (and get ahead) or with friends (to have fun seeing who is best at something) are fine. A woman can be competitive with a guy she likes too, but most men don’t find it attractive to be challenged to see who is more athletic, stronger, etc. so it’s just not the best idea. If I have to pick between showing him I’m a better driver or having him want to surprise me with flowers, I’d probably pick flowers and just know in my head I’m a better driver, no need to rub it in and make sure he knows it, kwim?

A feminine woman doesn’t participate in activities that require physical strength. That means she is weak. That is fine, but what does she do if another girl wants to beat her up and nobody is there to protect her?

One of the most basic human needs is to feel accepted as you are. Even a small baby can sense when it is accepted or not. A man’s greatest need is for his wife to accept him for who he is. It is not our job to change another person into who we think they […]

I just loved it. Keep up the good work
Before I was married, I rarely cooked at home. I worked almost every day, and would order lunch while at work from local restaurants, at an average cost of $10 a day.. After work I would either come home and make an unremarkable dinner, or join friends to eat out somewhere, usually at a cost […]

All those ideas sound lovely! Keep up the blog, I’m a work at home mom and enjoy the read. Here’s to better homemaking!

Thank you Sarah, I appreciate the support. To better homemaking!

Hi Penelope. I just found your blog from “Charming Birds from Trees” and it’s nice to meet you.
I just wanted to pipe in on your comment “I’d like to learn to make a great meatloaf”. The best meatloaf I have ever made has been in the crockpot! Ever since I discovered this I cannot turn back. It is the moistest, most delicious meatloaf you will ever have. Just take any meatloaf recipe and stick it in the crockpot, let it cook all day and enjoy! OH SO GOOD!
Also, I highly recommend “Nourishing Traditions”. They have a whole section on making stocks (broths) and it sounds so delicious. I’ve yet to try to make a good stock but just this week I bought a bunch of marrow bone and beef bone to try this. Once done they can be used for hearty, healthy soups and much more.
Congratulations on your marriage. May God grant you many years!

Thank you Sophia. I love my crockpot, so if I learn to make a great meatloaf in it, this would be a wonderful thing indeed! Thank you for the tips.

Vinegar is the Best! I use white vinegar by the gallon. I don’t mind the smell.
Do you have recipes for your cleaning products? What do you do to clean the toilet? I really enjoy learning and being inspired daily to be a better homemaker and have a home that I’m proud to show. Not for the material aspect, but for the cozy, atmosphere which beckons people to stop by and spend time with us. Thank you for taking your time to write such inspiring blogs. – I love your Femininity blog too! I appreciate the way you lay it out simply so it’s easy to follow and understand with your examples!!!!
