Inconceivable- Book Review

What if you wanted to have children, and the only way left to you was IVF? What if you find out the fertility implanted someone else’s embryo inside you? That is the question that Sean and Carolyn Savage faced when a clinic disastrously screwed up and they became pregnant with someone else’s baby.

Inconceivable book

The issues they face were endless: Is it ok to abort someone else’s child? Would you carry someone else’s child for them, when you could be carrying your own? Would you be able to carry a child, bond with him, love him, and give him to someone else once he is born? The extent of the issues facing this couple is extraordinary, and more extraordinary- they decide to carry the child to term and give the baby to its biological parents, as a gift, because it’s what they would have hoped another couple would have done for them.

You are warned: this book is a tear-jerker. I’m profoundly touched by their sacrifice and I don’t know what I would have done in this situation, but as their story navigates these and many more questions the enormity of what they faced and went through astounds.

Can this happen to someone else? This isn’t the first time it’s happened, and probably won’t be the last, but it’s a rare occurrence (thank goodness). I found myself asking a lot of questions as I read. Would I want to spend nine months carrying someone else’s child when I could be trying to have my own? What would I do if my child was implanted in another woman who now has the power of life and death for my baby.

Seriously, the questions do not end. What would you do?

If you’d like to check this book out, it’s available on Amazon and other bookstores, and is incredibly provocative and life-changing. • I remember this story, and just watched them on the Joan Behr show the other night. Hey Penelope I have something for you to check out

  • Virginia from That Bald Chick

WOW. Struggling with infertility and having to turn to IVF was a trial in, and of, itself. Let alone then having to decide what to do when implanted with the wrong embryos! I cannot even begin to fathom what they must have felt!

  • Annie @ Mama Dweeb

OMG i cannot believe that happened! I admire them for what they did. I cant wait to read the story for myself

  • I can’t even imagine the horror of dealing with that fallout. I don’t know what I’d do!

I totally saw this on 20/20 or something last week and I was HOOKED! What a crazy story. My question was why didn’t they ask if the other couple that they ended up carrying the baby for would consider carrying their baby, instead of trying to find a surrogate. I think I would have offered if I was in the other couples shoes. Maybe?? I don’t know. It is Inconceivable to even think about.

I don’t normally read this style book but it sounds interesting. I can’t even begin to think of how I’d handle a situation like that. Could you imagine even being the other couple? Especially if they were your last ones.

  • Shop with Me Mama

Oh..and I wanted to reply to your comment on my blog. That verse just basically means that we should always be sharing scripture/God’s word with our children. From the morning when they rise, till the time they go to bed.
