An alternative view for “Emma” (for fans of Jane Austen)

I read a Jane Austen essay called “In Defense of Mrs. Elton“. It is another side to the story of Emma as told by Mrs. Elton, who was sort of a villainess. Here a different perspective that is incredibly enjoyable, and paints Emma in a different (and more accurate) light.

Emma is spoiled. She is noisy and interferes in the lives of others. At the end of the book, she is rewarded for it all. Mrs. Elton marries a man who was in love with her. It can’t be easy to be Mrs. Elton and know your husband was in love with a very rich, confident, arrogant, pretty, and privileged young girl that makes you feel nervous and insecure. You may actually feel sorry for her after reading this great Jane Austen essay.

And for fun here is a little quiz:

Which Jane Austen Heroine Are You

Are you an Elizabeth or an Emma? Or someone else altogether different from Austen’s novels?

I just finished Pride and Prejudice…I can’t believe how wonderful her novels are, how true to life the situations seem. It is lovely that your daughter is an Austen fan.
