A favorite steakhouse of mine is Peter Luger Steak House, located in both Brooklyn and Great Neck, NY. With its rustic, laid back, wooden decor and minimalist menu, it serves a very specific customer base- one that loves a good steak. Sure, there is chicken and burger (lunch only) on the menu, but no one comes here for that. Famous for USDA Prime Beef, aged in their own aging boxes, the meat is incredibly tender. If you haven’t had steak here, you haven’t really had a steak.
We recently dined in Peter Luger‘s Great Neck location. When you first sit, you are served a selection of breads: sesame flat breads, salted twist buns, and onion rolls, so popular that many patrons ask for a second basketful to take home. I usually order Caesar salad when I dine out, but the waiter recommended their mixed salad with house dressing, and it was terrific. One of the great things about Peter Luger Steakhouse is that the atmosphere is so casual and the wait staff is so friendly that it easily becomes a place you come to often with friends when you just want to relax. In the past, I’ve seen Sean Connery, the Back Street Boys, and Mariah Carey relaxing here with no fanfare whatsoever. It’s just a laid back place for everyone.

We ordered Peter Luger‘s famous USDA Prime beef steak for two, cooked medium, sliced tomatoes with Luger sauce, oversized baked potatoes with sour cream, and creamed spinach for two. They brand their own sauce, which tastes a bit like cocktail sauce, and serve it with practically everything. All the sides are a la carte. We were tempted to try out some more items, but didn’t think we’d be able to eat any more. While the tomatoes and potatoes aren’t bad, you can skip them if you want to keep things simple. The creamed spinach is a great side that can be shared family style (comes in a little casserole dish to pass around) and the one I’d recommend for anyone stopping by for dinner.
I love steak, and I have steak everywhere, but the steak at Peter Luger melts in your mouth. The staff serves the sizzling steak from the hot central plate onto each plate for you, and despite the large cut and juicy pieces, no matter how full you get, you still crave more. We capped the evening a slice of their popular cheese cake, and while I still think mine is better (just ask my husband- he is afraid to will give you his honest opinion), Peter Luger’s cheese cake was pretty darned good.
$= About $75 a person with appetizer, entree, one beverage, and dessert.
Locations: 255 Northern Blvd, Great Neck, NY 11021/ 178 Broadway, Brooklyn, NY 11211

sounds pretty reasonable especially when it comes to steak. I’d love to see a picture of the outside of the building and inside decor. Plate pictures usually make my mouth water too. Sounds like a great place to eat. Yum
Truth be told, I would pay $200 for an amazing steak and this place looks amazing! Thanks so much for sharing!
Oh gosh hubby would be in heaven. I wonder how close this is to where we will be staying this Spring? We will be right next to the Empire State Building!
We LOVE Peter Luger’s. My husband is such a steak fan that we ate there twice last time we were in New York.
Sounds like a nice restaurant!
Yum! That looks and sounds delicious. My mouth is literally watering over here. If I am ever in NY, I know where I am headed for dinner!
I agree with you! They are the best!
I am going to coerce my husband one day to go eat here. Looks delicious! And that’s not a bad price at all to be paying for yummy food. Thanks for the review, I’m dying to go there now.
