The Best Educational Apps Are Fun Too

My sons love their iPads, and I love how well they often behave when I pull out their iPads in restaurants or on long lines. There are so many games and apps they look for, and as far as I’m concerned, if it’s educational and kid-friendly, I’m all for it. Today, kids are tech savvy, and a lot of learning is through gadgets, so I look for those that entertain them and teach them. Recently, I had the opportunity to review a brand new and hilarious app from Bastei Entertainment that does both: Little Luna – Big Talent.

My older son is five, so the fact that one of Little Luna’s talents is tooting is of course the funniest thing ever to him. Luna is a Bombardier Beetle who encourages children to embrace their own special talents while engaging them with music in this interactive app that promotes concentration and coordination. It’s also plain fun, and reminds me of adventure games I used to play on my computer as a child. I’d be enthralled for hours in the storyline, because it was up to me to advance it by finding things and getting things going, and I loved it. Little Luna is designed for children ages 4-8, but I found myself really liking it because Little Luna actually makes him listen to the instructions and think about possible solutions.

Tooting is actually a defense mechanism for bombardier beetles in the wild, but Luna’s family also toot to express themselves in unique and creative ways, and therein lies the silly aspect of this graphically beautiful, interactive storybook app. We played it on our iPhone because our outdated second generation iPads aren’t compatible with it, and loved the soft-voiced narration and the smooth, colorful, high resolution animation. It all added Little Luna’s ability to engage my son for long periods of time. Little Luna does yoga with mom, toots along with her musical brothers, bakes a lice cake, and much more…with the help of your kids. Children are challenged to keep up with a color match game, stand on one leg, find hidden objects, shoot targets, and more. My silly little son liked anything that involved tooting and kept asking me to find more parts where “the beetles toot!”

Narration is available in English, German and Mandarin Chinese, and the navigation is simple and easy for children. It even includes a timer to monitor your child’s time playing, and no option for in-app purchases! (I love that part, I’m a little tired of apps that encourage my children to pay to unlock levels or gain power, or finding surprise charges on my credit card). You can buy Little Luna- Big Talent here in iTunes for $2.99, and see a preview here:

I heard about this app from a friend and she said her kids like it too, but I forgot about it since she mentioned it a couple of weeks ago. Maybe my daughter will get a kick out of it. Thanks for the reminder!

  • I’ve never heard of this app before, but it is great that it is fun for kids and educational. Like you, I feel as long as things are educational its OK if kids spend time on iPads or TVs!

  • I’ve not heard of that app but it looks so adorable! I’m going to have to purchase it for the boys so they can check it out!
