Help To Find The Right Window Treatments For Your Home (& A Peek At Ours!)

Update at bottom (March 2014)

After all the work we did renovating our home, I wanted beautiful window treatments to complete it all. My main criteria for whatever graced our windows was that it be 1. attractive and 2. safe.

I favored anything easy to clean and that would do a good job of screening out the light, since the first windows we’d be dressing are those in the boys’ rooms (early morning light is a beautiful thing, but too-early rising bunchkins waking up an already tired mom is not). We chose the Graber Crystal Pleat 3/4″ Single Cell Blackout Shades from Blinds.com in Moonlight (a soft, off white color).

The Graber Crystal Pleat 3/4″ Single Cell Blackout Shades come with a cordless option, and they do a good job of blocking out light even though we chose to have them inner mounted. You can see the cells in these photos, which do double duty- they help to keep indoor climate controlled (no heat loss) and at the same time filter out the light.

There are many options for the Graber Crystal Pleat Blackout Shades, and we specifically chose options for safety (cordless) and attractiveness (inner mounted, for a neater look- you can choose outer mounted, which blocks out even more light).

We are happy with our choice. It’s very easy to lift the bottom up and down by holding the tab with one hand, and the room is almost totally dark any time of day. The only con to these fabulous shades is that they are a bit noisy when I push them up or down, and I always worry the sound will wake the baby up. So far it hasn’t, but if this is a concern, I think there are more “silent” options.

Until we had the shades installed (by an installer we hired through Blinds.com), our windows were covered with temporary shades, and we still have a house full of them, but we plan to work our way around and get beautiful, quality window dressings for the rest of the windows too.

Find The Right Shades For You!

If you are looking for new window dressings, try the Blinds.com Blind Finder tool. It walks you through various questions about what you’d like for your window shades and blinds, and as you answer questions based on your needs, it narrows down your options. I used it to find mine… I chose attractive, light blocking, easy to maintain (doesn’t require cleaning often), affordable, and with a cordless option, and I was matched up with the Graber Blackout Shades featured here.

What do you think of our new shades? What kind of window dressings do you have?

Update: In less than a year, the company (Blinds.com) branded products have started malfunctioning. The black out shades aren’t used often, but stick anyway when we try to lift them up and down (sometimes the shades won’t close at all), and a set of Blinds.com brand white shutter blinds I bought for our kitchen have never functioned properly (they won’t “catch”, so I can’t lift them- ever). I can only get light into the kitchen by turning the shutters to horizontal, but I can’t ever lift the faux-wood blinds fully with the cord for an unobstructed window view.

The Levolor products we purchased from Blinds.com all perform fabulously. As a result of every “generic” version malfunctioning, but Levolor providing consistent quality, I would spend a little extra money for Levolor brand and skip the Blinds.com version of the products altogether.

WOW! Those shades do an amazing job at blocking out the light, and they are attractive.

  • I have thick, white blinds, but I really like the look of platinum wood blinds, which I hope to get someday for my next home. 🙂

  • That blocked out a LOT of light.

  • Wow they do a great job!

  • Those are fantastic! The sun comes in the window in our bedroom so early in the morning this time of year, these would be great to have, especially on the weekends. Plus, I doubt my kids could destroy them nearly as quickly as they do regular blinds.

  • Love your choice!

  • I’ve never seen blinds that have the inner pocket area, that’s neat and wow they block out a lot of light.

  • Those shades look amazing and I just love how they prevent the light from coming in.

  • Love how much light they block out! I am hoping to invest in new blinds or some kind of treatment for our home this summer.

  • These look amazing.

  • Those shades look pretty awesome. I’d love to get cordless shades for our sunroom. Unfortunately, we’re only renting and I know my husband wouldn’t want to invest our own money into a home we don’t own.

  • We have wood blinds – I am making curtains now!

  • Those seem great! We have curtains instead of shades but those seem so no-fuss. Love it.

  • We usually get black out curtains, but I really like the idea of getting shades that do that!

  • Donna

Those look beautiful! We have added a sun room onto our house (it’s about 75% done) that has 8 windows and a french door… I hope to put plantation shutters on them. Then eventually have plantation shutters throughout the rest of my house.

  • Penelope

I’ve seen those, and am considering plantation shutters for my kitchen…they are lovely!

  • Donna

They are. The only trouble is that they are a bit pricey. Sigh.

  • Looks like an amazing window treatment.

  • I purchased something like these 2 yrs ago and loved them. But it had clips to close and those got lost quickly Love that theres a draw string

  • I love the look of these shades and I wouldn’t think that it would block the light so well, but they really do! All of our blinds are the white wooden ones and I like them well enough, but we still have to buy blackout curtains to go over them.

  • I have a mix of all different kinds of window treatments in the house. I hope to get rid of the mini blinds I have in a few rooms… not a fan.

  • I could use some blackout shades… I like yours!

  • Penelope

There isn’t string (we specifically didn’t want anything that would pose a strangulation risk)…the mechanism is inside and can’t be seen. You push up and pull down on a tab at the bottom and it moves up and down that way.

  • We need new blinds in our master bedroom. The ones that came with the house don’t do a good job blocking light at all. Those look amazing and I love how they are mounted inside your windows.

  • Those really seem to block out the light well. I would love to get new blinds for upstairs.

  • I really like those shades. We need something new for our bedroom.

  • I would love to have these in my home. The ones I have with the slats always get turned every which way.

  • Those look beautiful.

  • All our blinds in our new home are custom but not black out. I like the idea of having black out shades- right now we use black out curtains.

  • I like these. We had a different one in my son’s room and they kept breaking.

  • I absolutely love how much light your new blinds block out. That will do wonders for your energy bill as well. Our blinds are wider slats which are made of white wood and not plastic. They are durable but let in a fair amount of sunshine as well.

  • What a great way to ensure your kids sleep as much as they need and not just wake up because of the excess light.

  • Jennifer @ The Quirky Momma

I am in love with your blinds. Our new home (purchased in 2004) came with standard blinds. Some of them broke so we replaced with sheers. We really need good blinds in the kid’s rooms, though.

  • I love how this keeps the light out! Ours totally fails at that!

  • we need to replace a lot of our blinds. These look great!
