I’m a bookworm, and growing up, loved being transported to another world just by picking up a good book and getting lost in the pages. My love of reading is something I hope my sons will develop, and recently my older son made me proud by picking up a book, sitting me down, “Mama, sit!” and proceeding to “read” the book to me and his imaginary classroom.
totally. adorable.
He was obviously imitating his teacher, and I was totally charmed. I sat and listened to him describe the photos of each page, and then lift the book above his head to display it around from one side of the empty family room to the other.

A few days later he started to ask me to tell him stories. He’d listen with fascination while I told him fairy tales, and when I asked him to tell me a story, he’d oblige…”Once upon a time, there was a red car, the end!”
Yesterday, he started to ask me to read to him. He never let me read him books or stories in the past, so this made me especially happy because I always wanted to read stories to my children before bedtime. He sits me down, snuggles into my lap, and listens while I read and hug him.
These are definitely the best days of my life.

How sweet! I love books, too. I am trying to adapt to reading them electronically, but there is still just something about paper books.
As a book lover myself, I totally get your deep enjoyment from seeing your son getting hooked on books! My daughter was always a reluctant reader although she could read well above her grade level, she just never enjoyed it. Then she found some fantasy books she was interested in, and bam – she’d read and read and read.
I’ve always been an avid reader (I miss that I don’t have as much time to read lately), and read to my son since he was in the womb. 🙂 It pays off… my son read The Hobbit and took an AR (accelerated reading) test and got a 100 on it when he was in the 2nd grade. I didn’t read The Hobbit until I was a freshman in high school. The more kids are read to, and see you read the more they will be inclined to read and more importantly, love to read.
Oh my gosh, that is amazing! Your son is so smart!
Awww that is so sweet Penelope. I love reading books to my kiddo’s. My son Jeremy is almost 9 and reads on a 8th grade level and every now and then he will ask to snuggle up to me while I read him a book.
Readers are leaders!
That’s great! So happy to hear he is enjoying reading time.
how sweet. Both my girls LOVE books and me reading to them. I hope that never has to stop
I agree with you Penelope My boys really weren’t into reading or having me read to them. then one day I decided to try again and they loved it. My daughter from the day she was born, I read to her and she loved it. My boys were different. Less patience I think
That is awesome! My daughter LOVES books, my sons not as much though my oldest does have a series of books he likes. I too read a lot when I was young and still try too.
So sweet! I’m so happy that my son shares my love for reading, too, even though I barely have time to read something on my own (just his books, lol).
I have always loved listening to my children read. Now that it is a part of their nightly homework it gives us an extra excuse to escape into a good book with one another, plus, it is amazing to watch them become more fluent and use more emotions while they read!
Great that he is finding such pleasure in books 🙂
Cute! My kids love to read too.
I loved to read too and I love when my daughter asks me to read to her though it doesn’t happen very often.
Dr. Seuss and Eric Carle are some of our favorite authors! My oldest is a little bookworm too!
I have a huge love of books that I hope my children will adopt!
such a sweet post. I wish I had time to read more.
I so wish I had time to read more.
totally adorable
How cute! It is a great thing when they develop a love of books and learning.
I was a total bookworm when I was younger. I read all of those Babysitter’s Club books. I would try to read a book in a weekend or sometimes in a whole day.
How cute!
🙂
I’m also a book lover (hence the English Lit. degree); we have scores of books around here and read our favorites all the time. Even the baby has gotten into it and has to have a pile of books with him during nap-time. He reads each one and then falls asleep.
So sweet Penelope. Love that you are enjoying life with your wonderful kids!
It’s amazing watching their imaginations bloom!
This post totally made my heart swell! I’ve been reading my son books before bed since he was just a few months old {I have been lucky & he has not only let me, but encouraged me to} and it is one of my favorite parts of the day.
Love Dr Seuss! Oh the Places You’ll Go is the best!
Reading with the kids was absolute treasured time for me too. It makes me smile just recalling it all!
Right now I’m loving reading to M she loves to just look at the pictures and touch the pages.. can’t wait until she’s reading with me!
I was a HUGE bookworm as a child. My girls are always begging me to read to them and I LOVE it.
I love to read and am sadden that my son hates to read…
My little girls are like this also. They love when we read to them.
Its is great that you are install a lifelong love of reading.
