The Place He Will Lay His Head For The Next Eighteen Years

We eat organic food, and my babies wore organic cotton baby clothes, so I wanted them to sleep on organic beds as well. We have a Naturepedic organic toddler mattress for their cribs and the baby’s toddler bed, and that made me feel less worried about them breathing in chemicals for the many hours they were asleep. I felt like I was providing them the best that I could.

Now that little man is older and in a bigger (twin) bed, we needed a twin mattress. Luckily, Naturepedic makes organic mattresses in all sizes, and we had the opportunity to review a Twin Organic Cotton Quilted Deluxe mattress, a double sided mattress that is soft and bouncy, made of 100% organic cotton and 360 steel spring coils.

Favorite Features of the the Naturepedic Organic Cotton Quilted Deluxe Twin Mattress

  • Soft, pillowy quilted top is very comfortable and luxurious, and the entire mattress is made by Amish craftsmen right here in the US, displaying very high quality you can see.
  • Medium-firm support via 14.5 gauge steel coil innerspring is perfect for our son. He sleeps comfortably in it through the night.
  • 100% certified organic cotton material is made in the USA, and is really the most pure and healthy material to sleep on. It lets me know my son isn’t breathing in chemicals for the ten hours a night he is in his bed. The materials and the finished product are both tested for chemical emissions, and have passed stringent standards to be certified.
  • It’s hypoallergenic, and features a non-toxic fire barrier system, both added security to put parents at ease.

When I first opened the Naturepedic Organic Twin Mattress, I noticed it had a wool-like scent, even though there is absolutely no wool or latex in it, and it dissipated after some time. The mattress is just so soft that I enjoy laying on it when I sometimes put my son to sleep. Naturepedic offers their mattresses in a waterproof version as well. One side features an easy to clean, 100% polyethylene waterproof surface perfect for transitioning babies and bedwetters, that also functions as a dust-mite barrier for children who may suffer allergies. When your baby is fully potty trained, flip the mattress over to the luxurious quilted side.

The mattress featured here is not the waterproof version, so we added a Naturepedic Organic Mattress Protector Pad. It has straps in the corners to secure it around the mattress, offers two layers of organic cotton flannel around a thin waterproof layer in the center, and provides a dust-mite barrier as well.

Because the Organic Mattress Protector Pad is highly absorptive (features DrySleep™ technology), it reduces uneven temperatures, clamminess, “sweaty backs”, and allows for a drier, more comfortable sleep. There is nothing allergenic or toxic in the material (no PVC, latex, etc).

Since this is the bed he’ll be in as long as he lives under our roof, we know he’ll be breathing in healthier air every night, 8-10 hours a night, for at least the next 18 years, and that makes us breath a bit easier too. That is over 50,000 hours of a healthier sleep environment for our son. And of course, we plan to do the same for our baby once he’s ready for his twin bed.

We received the Naturepedic Organic Quilted Deluxe Mattress featured here for the purpose of review. We love Naturepedic’s desire to create healthy, quality products for our families, with materials and craftsmen from the U.S. These are our honest opinions and we were not compensated.

  • It looks like a nice bed. I have covers on all our beds too.

  • Sounds like a great mattress and perfect for what you have already begun with your kiddos. Might I add what beautiful floors.

  • Very nice mattress. How did you know when it was time to upgrade from toddler bed to a twin?

  • Looks like a great bed for him to grow into.

  • You simply can’t go wrong with an organic mattress and a protecting cover is a must!

  • Penelope

He didn’t fit into a twin anymore, he is pretty big now. The baby is now using the toddler mattress in his Thomas the Train bed (so I supposed when they keep bopping the side of the toddler bed it’s time to move out?)

  • You’re such a good mama to those boys and to make sure they’re not breathing in anything harmful is just a small example of it.

  • When you put it that way it makes sense to buy a high quality matress!

  • That mattress looks so nice! My son needs a cover like that.

  • Donna

It is nice that you can buy “organic” mattresses. We already bought our son a good/nice mattress and didn’t mind investing in it, because it will last him a long time.

  • That sounds like an exceptional mattress.

  • “For The Next Eighteen Years,” Right in your title you make a really good point about how important it is to get a good mattress! This one looks top-notch.

  • Looks comfy! My daughter needs a new mattress.

  • That mattress pad is really neat, wish they had those back when my daughter was bitty.

  • I need one of these for my bed!

  • Looks nice. I hope that other companies notice that consumers need more organic options.

  • This sounds like a bed that your son will use for a very long time. I love learning about organic bedding options.

  • It’s nice to know he will be growing up on an organic mattress.

  • This looks like a really comfy mattress and that’s so comforting that it’s organic and unharmful to your son.

  • I need to get us some new mattresses all around. That looks like a very comfy bed.

  • This is by far the most affordable queen-sized “organic” mattress I could find. I spent months deciding whether to buy this mattress sight unseen, since there is nowhere in the entire country where you can actually try it out. Also, there were no reviews of the mattress until now, so you have the benefit of me being the guinea pig. I have only had the mattress a few days. It is very firm, which is what I wanted. Naturepedic describes it as medium-firm, but it may be a bit firmer than that. My back hurts a little after the first few nights, but that is probably because it takes some getting used to. If you want a soft mattress then you should definitely avoid this. The construction appears to be high quality and I am very pleased. Naturepedic mattresses are made for baby’s and small children, but I am an adult and the mattress is fine. I also called naturepedic and they told me these mattresses are ok for adults too. The mattress also measures about 10″ high, not 8″ as described on the naturepedic website. I promise I will update after a few months of use.

  • Penelope

The one I have is in twin, and it’s actually soft (kind of pillowy)…it’s the double sided. I’d love to get the queen for adults one day, but I want to get my other son his own twin first- I want both my sons always on organic mattresses 🙂

  • We just bought a new mattress for my son, but we actually need to get a mattress pad so I need to look into that one!

  • I love Naturepedic. Both of my children have Naturepedic mattresses. 🙂

  • I’m really concerned about the mattress my son sleeps on. Our mattress required a prescription because it has no fire retardants. I had no idea there was a non-toxic fire barrier. Is it wool? Thanks for sharing this because we’re starting to think about the Little’s big boy mattress. I love that one side is waterproof!

  • Penelope

There is no wool in it (or latex)…it’s made to be non-allergenic. Here is the explanation on their site about the fire retardant properties (and how they use natural materials and a bonding process to make a barrier):

The primary filling material used in nearly all mattresses today is polyurethane foam. Polyurethane foam is highly flammable because it is essentially a petroleum product. In fact, the National Association of State Fire Marshals refers to it as “solid gasoline.”

Due to its high flammability, polyurethane foam is usually treated or wrapped with industrial fire retardant chemicals. Some of these chemicals introduce health and toxicity concerns. In fact, most manufacturers don’t even disclose their fire retardant ingredients.

At Naturepedic, we take a different approach. Organic cotton is a far superior filling material and is significantly less flammable to begin with, allowing for more creative solutions. Our exclusive fire protection system is based on the unique fire retardant properties of baking soda and hydrated silica permanently bonded to cellulose. This results in an inherently flame resistant barrier that does not break down. The cellulose fiber used is derived primarily from eucalyptus and poplar trees and has a low carbon footprint. These materials provide the best way to meet fire regulations without the use of questionable chemicals or wool.

Our toddler mattress is from Naturepedic too and that waterproof side has been a real time-saver- I totally love that feature. No stains on the mattress, even though he spilled and peed a lot, lol!

  • That mattress looks so comfy!

  • These mattresses sound amazing.

  • LOVE the non-toxic fire barrier. What a great, safe bed for your little man!

  • Mellisa

I’d say that looks like a very comfortable place to sleep for the next 18 years!

  • my son has terrible allergies and i bet that would help him sleep easier

  • Jennifer @ The Quirky Momma

    What a nice bed!

  • Love that they make organic cotton ones!

  • I had no idea they made organic cotton mattresses. When we went mattress shopping a couple years ago, the sales person didn’t mention it once and I never thought to ask.

  • Penelope

Isn’t that a shame? Their price is comparatively very good too, so a lot of people would probably choose organic if they knew it was available.

  • Angela

I never really thought about organic bedding before. Thanks for opening my eyes to this option.

  • I love that they make all natural mattresses – I need to get one for us too!! Love that protector too!
