Mushroom Calzone Recipe

One of the best parts of the holidays is all the yummy food. I cook a lot this time of year, and I love to create totally new recipes as well as make old favorites. I had the opportunity to try GravyMaster browning and seasoning sauce with a favorite recipe of mine recently. GravyMaster which is known for gravy, but can also be used to caramelize vegetables, lock in flavors and juices for grilled meats and veggies, and be added to sauces and marinades. GravyMaster® allows you to “Master the meal” this Holiday Season, and had a great time trying out a new twist on a favorite recipe of mine, a mushroom calzone recipe with onions, peppers, and mozzarella cheese- I caramelized the veggies!

How To Make Mushroom Calzone Recipe With Caramelized Onions

Ingredients for Mushroom Calzone Recipe

1 batch of pizza dough divided into 4 pieces
1 medium onion, chopped
1 8 oz container fresh mushrooms, sliced
1 cup shredded mozzarella
1 green or red pepper sliced
Gravymaster browning and seasoning sauce
2 tbsp olive oil
1 tbsp butter
1 tbsp fresh chopped basil
salt and pepper to taste

Directions for Mushroom Calzone Recipe

To caramelize mushrooms and onions
1. Heat olive oil in a pan. Coat onions and mushrooms with GravyMaster.
2. Add the onion to the pan and cook over low heat until translucent, about 20.
3. Add the mushrooms and saute until they start to caramelize, about 15-20 minutes.
4. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

To make calzones
1. Preheat oven to 450 degrees with a pizza stone or cookie sheet inside.
2. Flatten each piece of pizza dough to about 1/3 inch thick.
3. Place 1/4 cup mozzarella cheese on each pizza dough and spread out, leaving a one inch border of dough on each side.
4. Top the cheese with the caramelized onion and mushroom mixture, sliced peppers, and basil.
5. Wet the borders of the pizza dough with water. Gently fold the pizza dough over on to itself and press edges together. Press to get air out and seal edges with a fork to seam the dough together.
6. Brush the tops of the calzones with butter and use a large spatula to transfer each mushroom calzone onto the pizza stone or cookie sheet that has been preheating.
6. Bake for 15 minutes and remove when the edges start to become golden brown. Let the calzones rest for at least five minutes (the filling will be very hot). Cut the calzones in half and serve.

My mushroom calzone recipe with caramelized onions is great anytime, and especially during the cold winter months when your family comes in from a chilly day of working and playing and ready to eat a big, filling meal.
