The time has come for me to gather a collection of quality dvd’s for my son (and other future children). He is quickly learning, absorbing new things daily, and I want to help him by selecting quality and educational dvd’s. There are many shows that are popular with children that I know by name but never actually watched, and when I had the opportunity to review a dvd about Dora the Explorer, needless to say I said yes. Dora is a popular show with munchkins everywhere, and I had the chance to see why.
Dora’s Big Birthday Adventure dvd features three episodes, as well as a pop-up picture of Dora’s birthday celebration and a page of birthday stickers.
Great features of Dora’s Big Birthday Adventure:
♥ It’s fun for kids. My son was enthralled watching this. He kept staring up at the screen as little critters danced around and played, and I’m sure the colorful animation and singing helped hold his attention as well. Other children who were over while I viewed it already knew who Dora was, and watched avidly. Their parents tell me kids can’t get enough of Dora the Explorer, and their child watching this gives them 20 minutes to drink coffee and just enjoy sitting with their child.
♥ It’s educational. Dora’s Big Birthday Adventure (and likely all Dora dvd’s) teaches Spanish, songs, counting skills, and more. Throughout the episodes there were skills, puzzles, lessons. Much of it played like a computer game in that it asks your child to participate, rather than just moving on whether your child is catching on or not.
♥ It’s interactive. Dora asks a question, then pauses for your child to answer. She’ll then respond as though she actually heard your child speak. Dora may ask your child to repeat something, and pause to give them a chance to do so. Dora may be looking for something on the screen and ask your child to find it, or ask what the next step in a puzzle is. These all give your child a chance to figure things out, have fun guessing, and learn new things.
The episodes included in this dvd are the title episode, Dora’s Big Birthday Adventure, a double-length episode where Dora and Boots are faced with a witch who is keeping Dora from celebrating at her birthday party, as well as Dora Helps The Birthday Wizzle and Wizzle Wishes, making this dvd run for almost one and 1/2 hours of entertainment for your kids. The special features on this disc include a game for them to play as well, though little man is still a little young for that part. I’m glad we have been introduced to Dora the Explorer, and look forward to adding more episodes to little man’s collection.
