Potty Training Boys @PullUpsBigKids

Potty training is in full force in the Guzman home, going on two weeks, and we are proud to share that there has been progress. When little man has to poop, he now lets us now, and heads over to the bathroom. We’ve reached a milestone that seemed so out of reach just weeks ago (apparently potty training boys can be more of a challenge), so we are thrilled.

We started off potty training our son with a call from Mater (from the animated movie Cars). If you visit the Pull-Ups site, you can choose which Disney character to call your child and start them on the road to potty training, but unfortunately, Mater has a bit of an accent, so I’m not sure my son understood everything he was saying, but he tried. We love the idea of having a character from a movie he loves call because we were able to pick the time and date of the potty training call and have our video camera ready (of course we taped it). We had to have him call more than once because at first though, little man would just say “Phone, mama!” and hand me the phone, insisting it was for me.

We are pleased with how things are going. Little man proudly pulls on his Pull-Ups, and runs to his potty seat and pulls them off, calling us to come after him, once he is ready to go. Our main challenge now, and the one we are focusing on next, is getting him to pee in the potty too. He think potty is just for #2, and it’s ok to pee on himself since that doesn’t bother him much (and diapers tend to whisk the irritating feel of the urine away, so he may not even notice it).

We now ask him throughout the day if he has to go, during our scheduled “Pull-Ups Potty Breaks”, and if his Pull-Up is wet. We are encouraging him to notice if the number in front of his Pull-Up disappears (indicated he wet himself) so he knows it’s time to change it as well. Not sure if this is the norm with potty training boys, but I want to let my husband tackle the issue of teaching him to pee…it seems like a guy thing.

We shared this infographic with some potty training trivia a couple of weeks ago, but if you missed it, here it is again:

That’s a great infographic! Thanks for sharing – potty training is a ways away for me, but I’m saving this!

  • Too cute on the video and great info graphic! I’m a little far from potty training days.

  • Lots of helpful information here!

  • Potty training is a pita but so glad you are seeing results.

  • Good luck with potty training, glad Little Man is doing so well.

  • Way to go!! Try putting underwear on under the pull ups. That way he will feel the wet when it happens! Or just switch to undies when you are at home. It really does address that issue! So cool about the phone call too!

Okay this is just to great! Your son is adorable!!

  • I’m happy it’s going so well.

  • You video is so cute! I’m going to start working with the Little on this soon so thanks for the info.

  • Billie

Great information, Jake was luckily house broken when I met him. Kidding! His father and I got together when he was 6 so I skipped over the potty training business.

  • great graphic. We really need to start the potty training process but I’m too nervous

  • Potty training was a fun time – we rewarded them with books and they’d sit on their potty reading. Cracks me up remembering it. Good luck!

  • I remember potty training like it was yesterday. My biggest fear was that he wouldn’t be trained in time for preschool.

  • Oh I love that idea of a phone call how cute. Good Luck in your efforts I hope things go smoothly.

  • Marg

Great infographic! I hope when it’s time I can do this.

  • Stefanie

Way to go! I’m glad our potty training days are over.

  • Penelope

    Not over yet, but underway.

  • Such a cute little guy! How fun that Mater gave him a call!

  • Great infographic! Our potty training days are behind us, but oh, I remember them well. lol

  • Great tips! Glad I’m past all of this!

  • Having dad take him in to pee does help – they are such copycats. So does getting on a regular schedule – my son’s daycare has everybody try at 8:30, 10:30, 12:30, 2:30, and 4:30. His body learned the time schedule and the only accidents we had were at home when I wasn’t watching the clock.

  • Thanks for sharing!

  • We’re starting that in our house soon too… thanks for the tips.

  • Potty training four boys was enough for me. Pull Ups definitely came in handy when I was in the thick of it.

  • Sounds like you all are making wonderful progress! Congratulations for being on the potty training road to success.
