Where Fashion and Technology Converge

This post is sponsored by the sleek, stylish, lightweight HP Spectre XT Ultrabook, inspired by Intel. Vote for your favorite bag design!

Fashion and technology are two cutting-edge worlds that coordinate very well together, pushing each other to new heights. Technology has had an amazing impact on fashion, from making it more universally accessible to everyone through social media and the internet, to creating a popular niche in the fashion world that caters to techies seeking out sleeker, more sophisticated gadgets and gear and those who want their fashions to work for them as well.

Some Incredible technology-influenced fashion in the works include the creation of:

  • Innovative, futuristic materials, even spray on clothing, that covers, responds to environmental factors, and is totally flexible and comfortable
  • Clothing that responds to the needs of the wearer, such as body temperature or movement, and then self-adjusts
  • Fashion apparel and decor that includes musical capabilities (an iPod dress), communication aspects (a cell phone couch), and more
  • Running shoes that keep track of a runner’s speed and distance, and respond to terrain to adjust shock absorption
  • Vibrating tattoos that alert you to text messages, missed calls and low battery
  • Wearable air bags for cyclists
  • Fabrics that will self clean when exposed to sunlight

Very Judy Jetson; it’s the union of science and style, and very exciting!

My favorite influences of technology and fashion on each other today are those that I use myself. I love shopping apps that help me coordinate individual outfits and seasonal wardrobes, and programs that allow me to create a virtual version of me to dress and shop for. Internet shopping has progressed to letting us watch virtual fashion shows in real-time and purchase items we want while still in progress.

HP is running an amazing design contest where they challenged people to design a stylish and sleek laptop bag perfect for the small size of the HP Ultrabook. The winner will receive $10,000 and an HP Spectre XT for the best design of a new HP Ultrabook Bag. The 40 finalists were chosen by Jill of Inhabitat.com, the writers at Core 77, and Mondo from Project Runway Season 8. Now you can go vote for the winner! Visit the contest site for more details and to vote: www.hp.com/projectrunway.
