String Test For Gender Prediction: The Old Wives Have Their Say

It will be another 6 weeks or so before the doctor can accurately predict the gender of my new baby, and I’m not even sure yet I want to know. This is my last chance to be surprised since we found out little man was a boy at the 20 week sonogram. Of course I’m having fun trying to figure out my baby’s gender myself with various old wives tales such as the String Test and the Chinese Gender Prediction Chart, which predicted I’m having a girl.

The String Test is an old wives tale where you tie your wedding ring on a 12 inch string, lay down, and dangle the string over your belly. If it swings around in circles, it’s a boy. If it swings side to side, you are having a girl.

So tried it out. I used dental floss for my string since that was all I had (we don’t tie up a lot of things around here, but we are conscious about maintaining healthy teeth). I attached my gold wedding band to the mint floss, lay down, and let it go. According to my results, based on watching my gold band swing back and forth repeatedly, no matter how many times I retried (just to be sure), I’m expecting a girl. I guess we’ll find out if the Chinese Gender Chart and the String Test are right (and if those old wives knew their stuff) or if they were just making things up as they went along 🙂

Have you tried the String Test, and was it right for you?

I also heard that if you crave sweets, it’s a girl and salt, it’s a boy.

The secret project was a scrapbook/mixed media thing for my sister’s b-day!

  • April Decheine

Oh I have heard of that and remember when I was pregnant people always commented on how I was carrying it determined the sex LOL, but I like this one.

These test are just fun, and fun to compare. And girl your belly if that is what you call it is so cute!

  • Crystal @ Simply Being Mommy

    Wohoo, how exciting.

  • Kathleen

I have never tried it, but maybe I will for this surrogacy lol. After my third boy in a row, I pretty much new my youngest was going to be a boy.

  • I never tried it, but I can’t wait to hear if yours is accurate!

Never tried the string test. It is funny all the tales we hear when pregnant. Someone told me that if your have heartburn, your baby will have lots of hair and if you don’t, no hair. I never had any heartburn and both had a full head of hair. 🙂

  • Rachel with managedmoms.com

I did it with both of my babies and it was right both times! First I had a boy and then I had a girl. Whether or not it’s true, it sure is fun! Wishing you a happy and healthy pregnancy 🙂

  • Anne - Mommy Has to Work

  • Virginia from That Bald Chick

Funnily enough, I didn’t do any gender prediction tests when I was preggers with my son. We did find out quite early, though, because we had to have tons of sonograms since it was a high risk pregnancy. My daughter is adopted, and her birth mother had her first ultrasound at 37 weeks.

  • Donna

I did it for the fun of it when I was pregnant with my son… it was right. 🙂

  • Kelly

I haven’t tried this one yet but I should. It’ll be interesting to see. Most of my tests are coming back as girl.

  • Brandi @ Flip Flop Mama

How fun! I remeber doing all those gender predictor things fun to do but not always right 🙂
