The Knotted Updo (Hair Style Tutorial)

I love updo hairstyles; they add a little bit of elegance and prettiness to a look in an easy way without a lot of work, and updos can be worn casually or dressed up to look sophisticated for a night out or formal event. Like my past hair tutorials for the French Braid Updo and the Renaissance Braided Updo (aka S-Braid), the Knotted Updo or Knotted Bun is both easy and feminine, plus a lot of fun.

How To Create The Knotted Bun Updo Hairstyle

Step 1. Start with hair down and combed out. Hair can be naturally straight or curly, and this works on shorter hair as well as long as the pieces are long enough to knot.

Step 2. Starting at the crown, take a lock of hair and knot it. Keep the knot close to your head. Use a bobby pin to hold knot in place and leave the end loose.

Step 3. Continue to create knots around your head, going around until you knot all the pieces. If you want to create a half-up, half-down knotted updo, only create mini knot buns with the top half of your hair and leave the bottom half loose (also a very pretty hairstyle).

Step 4. Once all your hair has been knotted and pinned in place, takes the ends of each knotted lock of hair and knot it a second time. Continuously knot the pieces until there is no length of hair left and each is a continuous knotted bun. If there is not enough hair to tie another knot, simply coil the end into a loose bun and pin in place.

Step 5. Take any remaining loose ends and pieces and either tuck them in and pin with a pretty clip or bobby pin, or leave loose for a more disheveled, casual knotted updo bun. Pretty clips and hair accessories such as glittery head bands or flower barrettes can be added in for a dressier look. Carefully remove the bobby pins holding knots in place to replace with pretty hair accessories or over the original pins to cover them up. Voila, a fun and trendy updo!

Despite the very detailed explanations and the pictures showing us how-to, I can guarantee you that I would get tangled in my own hair. Clearly you are naturally good at doing hair! I would feel much better if you did the updo on me. Thank you 😉

Penelope you are just so talented. I can barely run my fingers through my 1″ of hair without it looking like a mess.

  • You have the most beautiful hair! And I can’t believe you did this all by yourself. Awesome!

  • Fawn

This is fabulous! I love updo hairstyles but am updo challenged so I tend to settle for the bun at the nape of my neck. I even bought one of those hair accessories that are supposed to make creating a french roll as easy as 1-2-3. I still haven’t figured it out :(. But this looks fantastic and if my fingers and hair become more coordinated, I think I can give it a try :).

  • I am so jealous of your pretty hair! Mine is really thick, curly and wavy and I never got to do things like that!

  • Kelly @ Texas Type A Mom
