Books add color to your life, so why not use them to add color to your home? If you’re a book lover who actually loves the real thing- real pages and real paper- and you can’t bear to part with any part of your beloved book collection even though you have an eReader, here is a way to keep those books as decoration instead of clutter.
Instead of a messy bookshelf like this:

Why not organize books like this?

Remember ROYGBV as a child? That’s red, orange, yellow, green, blue, violet, the colors of the rainbow. If you don’t want to organize your books by author or title (I never did- they were stacked willy nilly on my shelves), you can organize your books in the order of a rainbow, adding color and visual beauty to the room that holds your library. A rainbow bookshelf is not only pretty, it will bring some attention to some long-forgotten books as guests scan your organized library of colorful books.

If you have fewer books or a single bookshelf, instead of organizing books across a whole book shelf, you can still use ROYGBV on a single shelf to look like this:

My inspiration for my book organization is this dreamy home library…the rainbow bookshelf looks like artwork and is a fabulous way to display a lifetime of book collecting:

Very cool pics! I like the last one that is all color coordinated. I love the real thing!
Love the pics. Especially the last one. I love the real thing.
I love that last picture! I would have never thought to organize my bookshelf by the colors of the rainbow. Very creative.
That makes the bookshelves look so much more stylish and appealing! I’m boring and have always done alphabetical by author.
I love having books around my home on shelves, but the rainbow thing would make me batty! LOL
I love the idea of organizing by color. I would have to get books with vivid colors. So many of our books are brown.
That’s nice! 🙂
Cool idea about organizing by color. I would have never thought to do that. My books are separated by subjects… cookbooks, craft books, holiday books, kids book, educational books, true crime books… and so forth.
I never thought to arrange by color. It looks so pretty. I arrange mine by series and author and when I run out of room, I stack them willy nilly.
I have a “library”. I love it, Imix books with special shells and pictures.
What an awesome idea! Thanks for sharing!
If only I was so organized! LOL But it does look much better! I saw a post on Apartment Therapy where they decorated the non-working fireplace as a bookshelf. Neat concept, but didn’t look great in reality. Color-coding looks cool.
Love the pictures! So much you can do with books!
I actually already have my books organized by color- and everyone who comes to my house laughs at me! They do it with love, of course, but I love it anyway. 🙂
I love the color coding, now I need some books. I have never been a reader, some day maybe…
That last picture is gorgeous! I don’t have nearly enough colorful books to do something like that so I just go by genre.
Wow–gorgeous! I think if I did this, I’d buy books based on color rather than content.
Very neat! I however do organize my by genre and then big to little – boring maybe, but then I can find what I’m looking for!
LOVE it!! I have never thought to organize books on a shelf by color before! Sooo pretty!
That is REALLY pretty . . . but it would drive me nuts when I went to find a book, lol. My book are organized by genre …. then size (because I do need some visual symmetry).
wow, that is a great closet library!
LOVE it! Thanks for sharing!
What a wonderful idea! It’ll add so much color to a dull room.
unless you have a huge collection of books I actually like the look of the first two pictures way better.
The other books like they are a series of paper back text books just stacked together
