Inspired by Voortman – A Wafer Cookie Garden

Having fun with my boys creating DIY works of art is fun, and creating a craft or project they can also eat is especially fun. It turns out Voortman wafer cookies are perfect for building and creating. Just take a look at what my six year old created (before gobbling it up):

He used Voortman Coconut Crème Wafers for the body, peanut butter for the pants and as an adhesive, bakers eye candies for the eyes, and an edible marker for the eyelashes and mouth. He made the teeth from the cream inside Voortman Cookies N Creme wafers… and then he ate it all up.

Voortman has been inspired by baking for more than 60 years, and we were inspired by Voortman to have some fun with our snacks. Voortman Wafer cookies are one of the staples of the Voortman line of products and are available in eighteen different varieties including: Vanilla, Strawberry, Chocolate, Peanut Butter, Lemon, Coconut Crème, Cookies’n Creme, as well as no sugar added options… great for eating, and great for creating!

For our creations, we used Voortman Cookies’n Creme, Coconut Crème, and Strawberry, because we not only love the flavors, but the black and white, tan, and pink colored wafers were fun to work with. The wafers are lined diagonally on one side and like a graph on the other, so it is easy to cut the wafers into fun shapes, like hearts or diamonds.

We created a garden filled with strawberries (hearts), and I wanted to call it a “garden of love” but was overruled for its corniness. Instead, we called it the Cookie Garden, since it’s filled with delicious wafer cookies. The Coconut Crème wafers made a fence, crushed Cookies’n Creme wafers became our earth, and we planted strawberries in rows with the Strawberry Wafer Cookies we cut into hearts.

I think their favorite part was when I handed them a spoon and told them to dig in. Yum!

Feeling inspired to create your own wafer cookie masterpiece? Here are four tips from Voortman to help get you started:

1. Wafers can be split apart or cut into shapes easily with a sharp knife to create clean edges and lines.
2. Use a sticky substance like icing or peanut butter to help ‘glue’ your materials together.
3. If you’re building a bigger wafer structure, test your building techniques on a small sample first before applying it to your bigger creation.
4. If you’re creating different parts, let them set first before attaching all the pieces together.

I also found lollipop sticks and straws can be used to poke holes neatly into the wafers, and toothpicks stick very nicely through the wafer or the creme filling.

Create a Recipe or Masterpiece Inspired

by Voortman for a chance to win!

Now that you’ve created an edible masterpiece, it’s time to share it. Enter the Inspired by Voortman contest and share your skills! The contest ends June 13th and is open to all residents of the US and Canada (except Quebec) so head to your nearest Walmart to pick some up in your favorite flavors and colors and see what you come up with!

Once you are done, submit picture of your creation here and don’t let your lack of artistry hold you back. There are two categories in the Inspired by Voortman contest: 1. Wafer Structure and 2. Wafer Recipe. To enter, no recipe is needed, just a pic of the final products showing the wafers clearly in the structure or recipe (ideally comprising the majority of either).
