Help Change The Way Girls See Themselves- #SpeakBeautiful On Social Media

Social media is tough on women, specifically what they look like, and according to Dove research, 80% of women encounter negative comments on social media criticizing the appearance of women. It’s actually pretty brutal, and makes us start to think our value is based mainly on what we look like.

Dove wants to help change the way girls see themselves, and encourage us to #SpeakBeautiful. There is a lot of wisdom in the old adage “If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all” but we can also take it one step further, and speak up when here is something nice to say.

The tongue can cut more deeply than the sword, impacting our confidence and feelings of self worth. Ripping people apart is bad enough, but tearing them down for something they can’t help- what they look like- is even worse, especially since a woman’s worth is not based on what she looks like.

#SpeakBeautiful

We are all diminished when we dismiss a woman based on her appearance, instead of recognizing and appreciating her for things she has control over, like her character, her actions, her choices. When you talk about yourself, #SpeakBeautiful too. Your teen daughters hear you, other women hear you, and they believe that a woman’s appearance is her most important aspect. It’s time to change that.

  • This message of self-confidence and positive body image is great. Those are really important for young girls.

  • Jeanine

Love this! It’s so true social media can really take a toll on a woman but I don’t really pay attention to it. I love dove, and all they do!

  • Marcie W.

I just love this initiative! As a mother of two girls, I make it a point to compliment them as well as not put myself down in front of them too.

  • Tonya

This is so important. I have a daughter and fortunately she and her friends all have high self esteem, are smart and kind human beings. It is so sad when girls cannot believe in themselves or the beauty they each bring to the world in their own special way.

  • Kelly Hutchinson

I think people get so negative on social media. I love the idea of this positive campaign.

  • Valerie

This is such a great campaign. I love that Dove is involved with it.
