Chocolate Rum Balls Recipe

Chocolate Rum Balls are a popular Hellenic treat from Greece, where my aunt learned to make them while growing up. This popular, easy-to-make chocolate Greek dessert treat does not require any baking, and is a great way to round out a dessert display. Chocolate Rum Balls can be made with and without rum for variation, and are seriously delicious. I often pack them up in little gift trays to wrap in a bow and give out to guests to my home (along with a medley of other Greek desserts and pastries, like my homemade baklava).

Hellenic Chocolate Rum Balls Recipe

Ingredients

1 lb walnuts (deshelled and chopped)
1 lb sweet cooking chocolate (melted)
15 pieces zwieback
3 tablespoons granulated sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
4 tablespoons rose water (or 3 tablespoons rum)
Chocolate sprinkles (one bag)

Directions

1. Add walnuts and zwieback to a food processor and finely chop. Transfer mixture to a bowl.
2. Add melted chocolate, sugar, cinnamon and rose water (or rum) to the bowl and mix together. Allow to cool a bit so chocolate can firm up for shaping.
3. Spoon out approximately one full teaspoon of chocolate mixture and form into a ball. Roll ball in chocolate sprinkles.
4. Continue making balls until all mixture is used up, and place balls in baking cups to prevent them from sticking together.
5. Store airtight (eat within 3 weeks), or give as gifts!

Makes about 60-70 chocolate balls

Some variations on the Hellenic Chocolate Rum Balls recipe include rolling the chocolate balls in confectioner’s sugar or chopped peanuts instead of chocolate sprinkles. It’s a fun treat to make with your kids (they can help mix, roll the balls, and lick the batter afterwards if you aren’t creating the rum version of the Chocolate Balls recipe) and it’s a hit at parties. Enjoy and stay tuned for more yummy Greek desserts recipes!

no idea what zwieback is but the rest of this sounds yummy. Definitely wouldn’t make it with rum though!

I want to try these with rose water! I’ve only had them with rum–a co-worker used to make them and she’d really overdo it on the rum and they were a wee bit too strong for me. I like your version better. :)
